More Than Words is a family-focused program that gives parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) practical tools to help their children communicate. This workshop focuses on children between 2-8 years of age that are non-verbal or are only using a few words to communicate.
What you will learn in the More Than Words program
- How your child communicates and the next steps to take
- How your child learns best
- How to use what motivates your child to communicate
- How to turn everyday activities and routines into opportunities for learning to communicate
- How to use pictures, print and songs to enhance your child’s understanding and interaction skills
- How to talk so that your child can understand you
- How to develop your child’s play skills
- Why your child behaves in certain ways and what you can do about these behaviours
- How to help your child make friends
You will also learn strategies such as:
- ‘OWLing’ - (Observe, Wait and Listen)
- Understanding your child’s sensory preferences
- The 4 S’s (Go Slow, Show, Say Less, Stress)
- The 4 I’s (Include, Interpret, Imitate, Intrude)
- R.O.C.K in your routines
- Using visuals helpers
All Hanen Programs include:
- A comprehensive Parent Training Manual (MTW – 420 pgs) with helpful pictures and explanations
- 8 small group workshops (2 ½ hours /week)
- 3 individual home visits from your Hanen Certified Speech Therapist
- Individual recorded feedback sessions of you interacting with your child
- Support and networking opportunities with other parents who are going through similar experiences
